The Bükk National Park
Dear Visitors!
The Bükk National Park preserves the natural flora and fauna and the cultural values of the Bükk Mountain since it was created in January 1, 1977. 97% of the 43200 hectares large area is forested.
According to the average height the Bükk is the highest mountain in Hungary. The limestone cliffs reaching 800-900 m height, the deep canyons, the karst plateau, the mountain meadows, the clear air offer excellent oportunities for hiking, cycling, and for exploring the nature.
In accordance the great variety of topography and climate there are several unique and rare wildlife species int he mountain.
Glacial remnant and endemic species live ont he open meadows of the Bükk Plateau and int he deep canyons exposed to the Nort. There ara several elements of flora: some of them are typical in high mountain, there are mediterrian and continental plants. The butterfly and insect fauna is very rich here. There are 90 nestling bird species are known int he area with several rare, strictly protected species which can be found only int he Bükk, of only a few of them live int eh other part of the country.
More than 900 caves are known in the mountain, and many of them are dripstone cave. 45 of them are strictly protected. The karst and cave system of the Bükk Well-known scientific findings were found int he Suba-lyuk and int he Szeleta Caves.
Access to the national park area.
All the park area can be freely visited on hikers’trails. Some seasonal control can be around havitats of strictly protected, sensitive species.
The Bükk National Park Directorate placed information panels, nature interpretation trails, exhibitions for helping the visitors in getting closer to the natural besuties.
The exhibition of the Orbán-house (Szilvásvárad, Miskolci utca 10.) is about the geology, and natural interests of the Bükk Mountain.
The exhibition of Oszla-house int he Hór Valley near Cserépfalu shows the village life ott he early XX. century (information: 49/423935).
Two show-caves are open for the public in Lillafüred:
Szt. István Cave (dripstone) and Anna Cave (travertine)
Please help our nature conservation work with keeping the followings:
• Visitors are allowed to drive their cars only on public roads.
• Parking is allowed only in signed car parks.
• Hikers can pass through strictly protected areas only on marked trails.
• Collecting or damaging plants, animals or stones is forbidden.
Advanced licence of the Bükk National Park Directorate is necessary for
• orgainsing public and sport events
• camping out
• caving
• going close to habitats of strictly protected species
Cyclists!
Pay attention to the fact that forest service roads are for timbering transport. You may use even the marked roads for your own responsibility. We do not take the responsibility of accidents.
